Nisqually Wildlife Refuge
This ground was once productive
Tended and tilled by human hand
The pungent aroma of fresh turned sod
Yielding the promise of growth on the land.
Across this farmland now retired
I walk the rock-crushed trails
Pondering harvests of centuries past
Thankful that its beauty prevails.
Mount Rainier looms in the distance
Its snow-topped head brushing the sky
Observing the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge
Where Heron, Eagles and Peregrine Falcons fly.
Long southern fingers of Puget Sound
Grasping inward, among mudflats, on the west
On the east Nisqually River flows north to the sound
In the center are marshlands, where wildfowl rest.
Still and poised to catch fish for a meal
Blue Heron stand in the water, along the salty shore.
Surrounded by Canada Geese, Gulls, Red Wing Blackbirds
Hawks, Mallards, Grebes, Swallows and more.
Goslings and ducklings swim and feed
Small puffs of feather enjoying the water.
Deer, Coyotes and rabbits in the fields,
On the incoming tide are fish, seal and Otter.
Migratory birds from Central America
Stop at the delta to rest and feed
Before continuing their flight to Alaska
Harkening to the call of internal need.
I have watched numerous babies grow
Observed the wonder of geese in flight
Heard frantic honking and wings beating water
As Canada Geese engage in a territorial fight.
Peaceful, beautiful Nisqually Wildlife Refuge
Provides sanctuary for wildlife that are free
I’m thankful the beauty has been preserved
As a blessing and refuge for me.
